"We hired Tico Outdoors as a designated captain for our family gathering on Lake Wylie. It was the most relaxing day we've ever had on our own boat. Highly recommend!"

"The SaferBoater curriculum is top-notch, but having an instructor with 50 years of experience made all the difference. The real-world scenarios he taught aren't found in any online course."

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our instruction, charter services, and what to expect.

  • Is an online boating safety course enough?

While online courses meet most basic state requirements, passing a online class and test does not demonstrate competency to safely operate a boat. Our SAFERBOATER certified courses provide the critical hands-on, in-water experience needed for true competency and safety.

  • Do I need to own a boat to take your classes?

Our instruction is primarily designed to be hands-on using your own vessel, but we can also arrange a boat to learn your skills while you pick out the perfect boat. This ensures you learn the specific handling characteristics, electronics, and systems of the boat you will actually be operating.

  • What does a "Designated Captain" do?

Our Designated Captain service allows you to hire a USCG Licensed Master to operate your vessel for the day. This lets you fully relax, entertain friends and family, and enjoy the water.

  • How long do the training programs take?

Course lengths vary based on the curriculum and your experience. Our Small Power Boat course is typically 2 days, while Cruiser training (26-45 feet) can take up to 3 full days. We also offer half-day expert assessments.

  • Where do the training sessions take place?

All of our training sessions occur at your home port.
